Artificial Grass Factory
In the last few years, in realm of landscaping, artificial grass has emerged as a game-changer. Offering the look & feel of a perfectly manicured lawn without the hassle of maintenance. It’s easy to see why many homeowners are now opting for this synthetic alternative. Whether you’re looking to re-energise your outdoor space or simply tired of battling with natural grass, installing artificial turf/grass yourself can be a rewarding project. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of how to install artificial grass, turning your outdoor oasis dreams into a reality.

Why Artificial Grass/ Artificial Turf?

Before diving into the installation process, let’s understand why artificial grass might be the right choice for you. Unlike natural grass, this synthetic turf requires minimal upkeep, saving you time, money, and water in the long run. That’s a huge appealing factor for many who already swear by artificial grass. It stays lush and green year-round, regardless of weather conditions, making it ideal for areas with challenging climates. This matters if you don’t see the kind of rain needed for grass and plants naturally.

Additionally, artificial grass is durable and resilient, standing up to heavy foot traffic, pets, and children’s play without showing signs of wear and tear. For busy parents, this can also be a real life-saver.

Materials You’ll Need

Before getting started, gather the following materials:

1. Artificial grass – At the Artificial Grass Factory, we can help you with this
2. Crushed stone or gravel – your local DIY or Garden centre can help with this
3. Class II road base or decomposed granite
4. Weed barrier fabric
5. Edging material (e.g., bender board or metal edging)
6. Nails or stakes
7. Turf adhesive
8. Utility knife
9. Power brush or stiff broom
10. Infill material (optional)

Step 1 : Prepare the Area (Before You Lay the Artificial Turf)

First, clear the designated area of any & all existing grass, weeds, rocks, or debris. Then, excavate the soil to a depth of around 3 to 4 inches to allow for proper drainage (don’t’ overlook this detail, it’s important, even at the early stage). Next, install a border around the perimeter using edging material to keep the artificial grass in place.

Step 2 : Install the Base

Once the area is carefully prepared, you can then add a layer of crushed stone or gravel to create a stable base. Compact the material using a plate compactor to ensure a firm foundation. Then, spread a layer of decomposed granite evenly across the surface and compact it again.

Step 3 : Lay the Weed Barrier Fabric

Lay the Weed Barrier Fabric

Unroll the weed barrier fabric over the prepared base, ensuring that it covers the entire area. Trim any excess fabric and secure it in place using nails or stakes.

Step 4 : Roll Out the Artificial Grass

Roll out the artificial grass over the prepared area, allowing it to acclimate to the environment for a few hours. Once acclimated, trim any excess turf using a utility knife, ensuring a snug fit against the edges.

Step 6 : Join Seams (If Necessary)

If you’re installing multiple rolls of artificial grass, use turf adhesive to join the seams together. Apply a thin bead of adhesive along the seam and press the edges of the turf together firmly.

Step 7 : Add Infill (Optional)

If desired, spread infill material evenly across the surface of the artificial grass using a power brush or stiff broom. This step helps to weigh down the turf and provide additional support.

Step 7 : Brush and Fluff

Finally, use a power brush or stiff broom to brush the artificial grass fibres against the grain. This will help to fluff up the turf and give it a more natural appearance.
