Artificial Grass Factory

One of the top questions we get at Artificial Grass Factory is how to clean the artificial turf or grass. Keeping your artificial grass clean is essential to maintaining its appearance and prolonging its lifespan. Thankfully, cleaning artificial grass is relatively straightforward and requires minimal effort (which, of course, is one of the reasons for choosing it in the first place).

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean artificial grass effectively:

Daily Maintenance:

1. Remove any Debris:

Regularly remove leaves, twigs, and other debris from the surface of the artificial grass using a leaf blower, rake, or stiff brush. This prevents debris from accumulating and affecting the appearance of the turf/artificial grass.

2. Brushing:

Use a house brush or a power brush to brush the grass fibres against the grain periodically. This will help to lift and fluff up the fibres, thus restoring their natural appearance and preventing matting.

Weekly Maintenance:

1. Remove Pet Waste:

Although it’s pet friendly, it’s important that you promptly remove any solid waste from the surface of the artificial grass using a poop scoop or a plastic bag. Rinse the area thoroughly with water to remove any remaining residue. This may not be the most fun item on the list but it’s hugely important to keeping the artificial grass clean.

2. Hose Down:

Use a standard garden hose to spray down the artificial grass periodically, especially in areas where pets frequent or where debris tends to accumulate. This helps to remove dust, pollen, and other surface contaminants. It also helps with any smells.

Monthly Maintenance:

1. Deep Cleaning:

Perform a deeper cleaning of the artificial grass once a month or as needed. Use a mild detergent mixed with water to spot clean any stubborn stains or spills. Gently scrub the affected areas with a soft-bristled brush and rinse thoroughly with water.

2. Disinfection (for Pet Owners):

If you have pets, consider disinfecting the artificial grass periodically to eliminate bacteria and odours. Use a pet-safe disinfectant or a solution of vinegar and water. Apply the disinfectant evenly over the surface of the turf and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. You will need to know if your pet has any allergies and proceed accordingly.

Seasonal Maintenance:

1. Remove Snow and Ice:

During the winter months, promptly remove snow and ice from the surface of the artificial grass using a plastic shovel or snow blower. Avoid using metal shovels or sharp tools, as they can damage the turf fibres.

2. Fluffing:

After heavy use or prolonged periods of inclement weather, use a power brush or stiff broom to fluff up the grass fibres and restore their natural appearance.

Additional Tips:

1. Avoid Harsh Chemicals:

When cleaning artificial grass, avoid using harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the turf fibres and affect the colour stability. They may also be dangerous for your pets too.

2. Prevent Weeds:

To prevent weeds from growing through the artificial grass, regularly inspect the edges and seams for signs of weed growth. Use a weed killer or herbicide as needed, being careful to avoid contact with the turf fibres. If you don’t keep an eye on this, weed growth could become a bigger problem than it needs to be but with a little care and attention, it’s easy to keep this under control.

3. Professional Maintenance:

Consider hiring a professional artificial grass maintenance service for periodic deep cleaning and maintenance, especially for larger or heavily used areas. This comes at a cost but many of our customers tell us the cost is worth it in the longer term.

By following these simple maintenance tips, you can keep your artificial grass looking clean, vibrant, and inviting for years to come, ensuring that you enjoy all the benefits of a lush green lawn without the hassle of regular upkeep.
